Nutrition and Hydration Tips for Older Adults

Nutrition and Hydration Tips for Older Adult

Maintaining good nutrition and hydration is essential for the health and wellbeing of older adults. As we age, our bodies undergo changes that can affect appetite, nutrient absorption, and thirst perception, making it especially important to follow a balanced and supportive diet.

Here are some practical, evidence-based tips to help older adults stay nourished, hydrated and healthy—whether living independently or receiving care at home.

1. Prioritise Nutrient-Dense Foods

Choose foods that are rich in essential nutrients without being high in calories. Include colourful fruits and vegetables, whole grains such as porridge oats and brown rice, lean proteins like poultry, fish, beans and lentils, and low-fat dairy or fortified plant-based alternatives. These provide vital vitamins, minerals and fibre.

2. Ensure Adequate Protein Intake

Protein helps preserve muscle mass and strength, which naturally decline with age. Include sources such as fish, lean meats, dairy, eggs, tofu, legumes and beans. Aim to spread protein intake evenly throughout the day to support muscle health and repair.

3. Stay Hydrated

Older adults often have a reduced sense of thirst, which increases the risk of dehydration. Try to drink 6–8 glasses of fluid a day—water, low-fat milk, and sugar-free drinks such as tea or squash all count. Foods like cucumber, melon and oranges also help boost hydration.

4. Incorporate High-Fibre Foods

Fibre supports digestion and helps prevent constipation, which is common among older adults. Wholegrains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes are great sources. Gradually increase fibre intake alongside plenty of fluids to support gut health.

5. Limit Added Sugars and Salt

Minimise processed foods high in added sugars and salt. Look for alternatives like herbs, lemon juice or pepper to flavour meals. Eating fresh, home-cooked meals is often a healthier choice.

6. Plan Balanced, Enjoyable Meals

Ensure meals include a variety of food groups—protein, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats. This supports overall wellbeing and makes eating more enjoyable. Meal planning can help reduce stress and encourage healthy habits.
